Patuxent Roll-Off has been a longtime supporter of the MSP Polar Bear Plunge and is proud to announce that we will once again participate in the event by donating dumpsters. Each year the Maryland State Police sponsors this event that raises funds for Special Olympics of Maryland (SOMD).
Participants in the plunge register and get sponsored to raise the money. On the date of the event, the sponsored participants plunge into the Chesapeake Bay in the middle of the winter (usually during the month of January), hence the name Polar Bear Plunge. This year event will mark the 16th time the plunge has been held.
The first plunge event in 1997 had 350 participants and raised about $75,000 for SOMD. An impressive improvement in both funds raised and participants has occurred since that time. Last year, a record setting 12,000 participants raised $3.5 million! The event has also attracted the attention of several local celebrities and pro athletes. Their support, in addition to the support of the participants, is what continues to help the event grow.
SOMD uses the proceeds from the Polar Bear Plunge to support their athletes and allow them opportunities to compete in events all over the country and the world!
The 2014 Polar Bear Plunge will be Patuxent Roll-Off’s 12th year sponsoring the event. Every year we are amazed to see how the event has grown and how it has become one of the biggest charitable events in Maryland history, and we are proud to be a part of it.
Update: The first time since inception, the MSP Polar bear Plunge was cancelled due to high winds, 3-4 foot waves and icy beach and water conditions, the plunge was postponed until March 8, 2014. Perhaps this will become an annual event in March? Might make more sense, since recent years there have been many weather related problems, such as the massive tents collapsing. Guess we will wait to see what happens in 2015!
